Decision-Making with Dementia: Capacity, Choice & Advocacy
Learn about how progressive dementia and Alzheimer’s disease affects an individual’s ability to function and make decisions. Session will provide information about symptoms and changes to help you identify those struggling with cognitive impairment, determine decision-making abilities in individuals with a dementia diagnosis, and insure ethical standards of practice in your professional role. Discussion will also include approaches to difficult conversations with those with dementia and their families.
- Overview of how progressive dementia & Alzheimer’s disease affect the ability of individuals to make decisions
- Discuss how and when to facilitate decisions and offer choices to those with cognitive impairment
- Understand ethical standards of practice regarding informed consent, capacity and advocacy
- Suggest approaches to difficult conversations with a person with dementia and their caregiver and family
